Properly spriting from scratch!

November 24th, 2007

Some people don’t realize that you do not necessarily need a template in order to sprite. It actually is possible to sprite without using any kind of pre-shaped figure. Below you will see what I did to fully create one of my own original characters. He is rather simple, but it gets the point across. I will be working on a tutorial that show cases how to do this at some later date, but at the moment I don’t really feel like it

As you can see I show my progress from beginning to end with no real explanation, it’s meant to be an example of visual progression. You can pretty much notice the changes in each step.

This did not take very long it’s just a matter of getting down the look you want. Good luck everyone and happy spriting.

    You aren’t done yet. :P

Pixel artists rarely ever go straight from the original line art to finished. The character design is lacking, it’s a red headed Cloud in beige with a bald spot on the side of his head.

Spend at least 3 hours more on that!

Nice entry though, I get fed up when people think the only kind of pixel art is spriting on some sort of RPG template or editing (usually screwing up) perfectly good commercial sprites.

Mind if I continue your example if you don’t want to devote the time?

You explain it very well. I like it very much especially on how you use the technique to actually develop spriting.
