Goku Breeze Sprite Sheet

December 9th, 2007

I just wanted to show off my work with my goku breeze character by letting everyone view my progress and development.  We have goku in front view doing some of his most famous attacks. There will be more to come in time, it’s just a matter of me sitting down and actually taking the time to do it. Also I will be developing a how to sprite goku breeze tutorial shortly. So check it out when I add it.

A New Spriter on the block

December 8th, 2007

A while back Green Raven created a template named the Cucumber template.  Though the template can be considered wonderful, there is a lack of resources for it. So recently a new spriter decided to take on the task of creating some resources for the template. Green Raven him self has made some characters with the template but not many.

The sprites below were created based off of Green Ravens Cucumber template.

What exactly is pixel art?

November 24th, 2007

Well for that to be answered it requires a little knowledge into the history of digital art. What many people may think pixel art is, it may not be. First of all Pixel art is a type of digital art that was frequently used in the making of computer and mobile phone games. It was first used in 1972, mentioned in publication ten years later and has grown from there.

The are some key aspects that make pixel art… well pixel art. Techniques of line art are used initially before dithering colors. Dithering can and will be explained in more detail here. The coloring of the pixel art is done before using anti-aliasing.

Pixel art is generally divided into two major categories, isometric and non-isometric. Isometric sprites are those that are at a certain angle, and non isometric are traditionally in standard view. Today pixel art is used in many ways. Pixel art has been used a lot in video games, including some Nintendo DS games. Eboy is well known artist that is famous for his use of pixel art.

Properly spriting from scratch!

November 24th, 2007

Some people don’t realize that you do not necessarily need a template in order to sprite. It actually is possible to sprite without using any kind of pre-shaped figure. Below you will see what I did to fully create one of my own original characters. He is rather simple, but it gets the point across. I will be working on a tutorial that show cases how to do this at some later date, but at the moment I don’t really feel like it

As you can see I show my progress from beginning to end with no real explanation, it’s meant to be an example of visual progression. You can pretty much notice the changes in each step.

This did not take very long it’s just a matter of getting down the look you want. Good luck everyone and happy spriting.

That lovable oath goku has got to be one of the most recognizable characters in anime history. He’s appeared in just about every dragon ball based video game. I thought that it was about time that I created a Goku of my own. Well this character is not entirely my own considering I chose to create it with the Breeze Template.

Armored Hero Sprite

November 18th, 2007

Every video game has to have a guy with a large sword, with some armor…. that’s just basic game theory. That being, the case of having a reference to look at, or an example sprite of how a video game hero looks, can be a great tool. Below you can find a normal and a zoomed version of some pixel art a guy I just made. Look how great the work is, the only difference between the two images is that the hand on the second one is raised back holding a sword. This is a good example of animating poses, even though it’s just two frames, and lacks animation, one could easily fill in the middle frames after having the beginning and end frame.

After receiving this image I decided to make some color palettes to showcase some of the excellent color choices.

Agumon Pixel Art!

November 17th, 2007

Everyone knows what a digimon is, you remember those little digital monsters from that anime show. Well back in the day everyone had one of the digivice games that allowed you to have your very own pet. You could raise and battle your digimon friends, make the digivolve, and fight random digimon. Though the original digimon digivices are old and no longer sold, a fan has taken the time to re create some of the popular characters. Below is some pixel art of agumon that was based off of the digivice toys. It’s really good, the artist definetly has some skill. It was made by Xilef. Soon there will be a tutorial that will feature some of Xilef’s artwork. The character was sprited using back. If you want to make your own digimon character pixel line art you can look at Xilef’s agumon sprite as inspiration. You can also use my new Pure Black color palette to help you out.
