Building The Sketch
Digital Art Process Tutorial: Part 1
Introduction
This tutorial is a three part series that will teach you how to create digital art from start to finish. The tutorial is broken into three different pieces: Building the sketch, inking the artwork, and finally digitally coloring the lineart. Here we will focus mainly on the sketching, we will start from basic shapes and build our way up to more complex pieces.
Needed Materials
Graphic Creating Software (Photoshop)
Basic Computer Skills
Step 1:
To begin first we start with a blank area, open up your favorite drawing program and start by drawing a basic cirlce. You can create the sketch either on your computer or draw it on paper, and then scan it for the next part.
Step 2:
The next step is to draw some guide lines, placing a plus sign type grid that will go over the entire circle. They won’t serve much purpose in this tutorial but in more complex artwork guidelines are important. Next draw in the two ovals that will represent the eyes.
Step 3:
In this step we are doing nothing more than adding in the facial stripes, they just go on the bottom part of the circular body.
Step 4:
Now we can begin the add the cap, of this little nut derived monster. Basically just draw a rounded triangular shape over the top of the circle.
Step 5:
In this step we are going to add some depth to our little creature. We can do this simply by adding the back “brim” of the cap. Just add in some slanted lines coming from ther back of the head to the edge of the cap. Use my image below as a reference of course.
Step 6
In this step all we are going to do is add in a small little ball at the top of the cap. Though it’s not that big of a step it is just as important as the others.
Step 7
In this last step all we are going to do is take the time to do a little clean up of the overall image. Be sure to remove the view of the upper part of the cirlcle, the cap over laps it… so it shouldn’t be seen. After doing that the sketch is now complete, and you are now ready to move on the second part of the tutorial.
